When I reply that I work at an advertising agency people tend to light up. “Oh that’s cool! So are you like Don Draper?” To which I reply “Ahhhh… well no, I’m definitely not Don Draper. Maybe a little more like Roger Sterling. Or Pete. But I can’t stand that guy… or maybe a bit of Joan too…” By the time I am done with my Mad Men character dissection the person has gone from being lit up to showing a slightly confused, what the heck is this chick talking about? look.
Ahhh agency life. It may not be the glorious drink all day, take some drugs and come up with the best idea ever, as they show on TV. No, we come up with our ideas sober (I guess I can only truly speak for myself on that one).
What I love about being at an agency is the research and digging that goes into a project to better understand who the client really is. This enables us to come up with a creative and strategic solution to solve the problem. Sure, it’s great to have a client that knows what they want, but it is even BETTER when they have no idea at all. They only know that there is a problem. That’s where we come in. We assemble a team of researchers, strategists, copywriters, production crew, media buyers, accounts people and creative minds who work together to come up with an answer. A smart answer.
There are times we roll into work and share ideas that we came up with before we fell asleep or while in the shower. But it’s when we are all together that the magic really happens. Through brainstorming, field trips to client sites/locations, focus groups and other research techniques, we dig up everything we can and throw it all out on the table to see what we can make of it.
That’s a glimpse at agency life. I don’t want to make it seem like we just hang around all day conjuring up grand plans for our clients to take over the marketplace, but at times we do! It’s a tough job, but someone’s gotta do it.
With the creation of this blog entry I came across this website that I just had to share. This guy really knows how to show agency life through GIFs.
