The 2016 awards annuals are all art directed by the award-winning studio Tung (madebytung.com), and together comprise a set of five collector's editions to celebrate the publication's 30th anniversary. Design Awards winners are also published in the online winners' gallery and awards archive, and in the tablet edition of the magazine. Every winner is eligible to win the AACE (Applied Arts Creative Excellence) Award or Young AACE Award, bestowed upon the highest scoring entrant in the Design and Young Blood Design categories.

The Applied Arts Design Awards are an international competition — winners often find new clients in the creative directors, producers and other influential decision-makers that read the magazine.
