Ribbon Rouge: Student Mentorship

Deadline for student applications: Thursday, September 15 at 9pm

In correlation with HIV Edmonton’s Ribbon Rouge fundraising event, GDC Alberta North is looking for 15 student graphic designers/illustrators to participate in a mentorship opportunity. This year’s event, Arts for Action, will be hosted at Latitude 53 (10243-106 St.) on November 24, 2016.

This year, the theme is Sex Evolution #sexolution. The theme explores how over the years our notions on sexuality has evolved and how that intersects with HIV prevention work as we are more accepting of sexual minorities.

Students will be given the opportunity to experience a ‘real client’ scenario, with client meetings, a creative brief, guidance through the entire process and final presentation.  Students will be asked to interpret this theme through an image, which could be illustration, typography, photography, collage, etc.

Each week students will be introduced to a new local creative professional (designers, illustrators, copywriters) and will have the chance to learn from this industry professional and get intimate feedback on the progress of their project. This is a great opportunity for students to find out more about the business of design and illustration, network and make connections in the industry.

This entire mentorship experience will be coordinated and managed by GDC Alberta North, and the final images the students produce will be exhibited in poster format, at the Ribbon Rouge event. The images will also appear in the event promotion, website, and social media. GDC ABN will be featuring each student participant through social media and the students are encouraged to share their process work through twitter and instagram with the hashtags #sexolution and #gdcmentorship

The Ribbon Rouge Foundation deals with sensitive subject matter as part of its mandate to get to zero HIV transmission through the Arts. Topics may include violence, sex and messages that may provoke strong responses from artists and the general public. The Arts Illustration Mentorship is aimed at developing artists and their art through strong and enlightening themes. Participant discretion is advised.
