On Saturday, Sept. 10, the Saskatchewan North Chapter - GDC SKN - presented Design Day, an event that offered our members’ professional skills to create promotional materials and an opportunity to help others in the community.
Design Day’s goal was for non-profit organizations to receive professionally designed collateral for use in the promotion and development of their services, plus create awareness of GDC in the community and what our profession is. And hopefully attract new members for our chapter!
We partnered with Affinity Credit Union, a strong community supporter who supplied venue, meals, and supplies, and United Way of Saskatoon, who liaised with the non-profit groups for selection and prep them to choose from a list of deliverables. The three non-profits selected were Big Brothers Big Sisters of Saskatoon, Str8 Up, a youth group for ex-gang members, and CNYC – Core Neighbourhood Youth Group. The non-profit groups could each have a rep involved in the development of the materials with their design teams, (which each took advantage of!), and be presented with usable files at day’s end.
We gave members first crack at volunteer spots, then opened up to designers and writers in the public. It was awesome to get enough people to have three design teams, each led by a CGD member.
So how did it all turn out? Great, in fact! By day’s end each non-profit walked away with beautiful design files, new connections, and a great experience. The designers all gave positive feedback on the experience, and the non-profits were thrilled about what they got. The best feedback was that the non-profits each said they didn’t realize all the steps that went into creating design, and they came away with a greater respect for what is involved! And, everyone talked about ‘next time’! So - success!
Pics are of event day – we also took video of the event plus interviews, which we’re putting together to post on social media etc – can send along the final product to National as well – hope to have that within a couple of weeks!
