Awards are awesome– it feels good to be recognized for doing something cool, and they can help pad out your resume! And it’s never too early to consider starting to rake in some hardware, even if you’re still a student. Here’s a few tips and tricks to help you start filling up that bookshelf.

Review previous winners
Check out last year’s winners! You’ll get a sense of what the judges are looking for, and it could also help you decide which category to submit a certain piece of work in (especially since awards are notorious for having overlapping categories!).

Pick and choose
Submitting to every possible award show and magazine might increase your odds of winning, but it’s also a good way to break the bank. Focus in on awards that offer a student discount, or are more tailored to your style of work. Some awards offer prizes, others are based around recognition only– weigh your options, and decide why you’re submitting (although banking on a submission to win you money isn’t a great goal to come into award season with!).

Ask your instructors & peers for feedback
It’s hard to narrow down what to submit– especially when you’re personally attached to your own work. Ask for help! You’ll be able to get a consensus on which design might be strongest, and as a bonus you can start earmarking well-received projects for your portfolio.

The early bird gets the… discounted price
Many awards have an early-bird discount! It’s worth it if you can get your #$%@ together in time!

Read (and then re-read) the submission requirements
Don’t have your submission disqualified because of a small technical error! Make sure you correctly submit all the required pieces and accurately follow the required specifications.
