Canada Hosts ico-D 28 General Assembly in Vancouver

Canada hosted the 28th ico-D General Assembly and associated activities from
November 29 - December 1, 2019, at Emily Carr University in Vancouver BC.

Former GDC National President, Johnathon Vaughn Strebly CGD, was recently sworn in as ico-D President for the 2019-2021 term. He is the fourth GDC member to lead the organization. Other ico-D presidents from Canada include Walter Junkind (1974-77), Jorge Frascara (1985-87), and Robert L. Peters (2001-03).

“My interest in serving the Executive Board of ico-D is to further my contributions to the design industry through advocacy and public awareness to the value of design,” said Johnathon.
“The goals surrounding the understanding of the power of design in our community do not stop at the local level, or at the national level.”

GDC National President, Mark Rutledge CGD attended as the GDC’s voting delegate. "I wish to extend my heartfelt gratitude and admiration and to congratulate Johnathon Vaughn Strebly, CGD," said Mark, "as he takes the helm as President of the International Council of Design (ico-D). Canada has a long history of contribution at the International level and this continues with him. Johnathon’s advocacy and passion for design will no doubt be an excellent addition to the International Design community."

This year four Canadian individuals were honoured for their outstanding contribution to the design community with the ico-D Achievement Award. This year’s Achievement Award winners include Bob Hambly, Creative Director at Hambly & Woolley Inc., Hélène Godin, Executive Vice President and Founder and CCO at Factry in Quebec, Hanno Ehses, GDC Fellow, and Deborah Shackleton, Associate Professor of Design and Critical Studies at Emily Carr University of Art and Design.
 
ECUAD was the host partner for the ico-D General Assembly and the Platform Meeting. The Platform meeting focused on presentations, expert panels and group discussions on defining “design”, defining professionalism, discussing professional standards, ethical conduct, collaboration between design associations, and worldwide Indigenous issues.
 
GDC BC Chapter hosted delegates and the community at “Practivism X, Igniting Societal Change Through Design”. The event provided an opportunity for connecting the local design community with the ico-D international community.
