Designing for the Inclusive Future

The well-designed future is one that accommodates and includes all people. Join us for an evening where three designers working in the fields in inclusive design discuss real-life examples of how graphic design can become a catalyst for change. The three short talks will be followed by a roundtable discussion.

  • Antionette Carroll (Creative Reaction Lab Group St. Louis, AIGA’s Diversity and Inclusion Task Force) on human rights, diversity and inclusion in design education and urban design.
  • Parker McLean (In the Rye Creative, Vancouver) on crafting human-centered design systems online
  • Sam Holleran (The Design Trust, NYC) on creating social justice, design education and environmentally sustainable public space

Creative Reaction Lab Group

Antionette D. Carroll is the founder and President and CEO of Creative Reaction Lab, a social enterprise using immersive challenges to educate, convene, and support civically-minded community members to design better cities through human rights and equity lens. Throughout her career, Antionette has worked for nonprofits working for social justice, human rights, and diversity and inclusion. These experiences led to her background as a social entrepreneur, nonprofit leader, and design activist. Antionette's personal mission in life is to CHALLENGE standards, make CHANGE, and CHAMPION approaches resulting in foundational and community impact. Also, Antionette is an active community volunteer. Antionette was named the Founding Chair of the Diversity and Inclusion Task Force of AIGA: The Professional Association of Design in 2014. As of June 2016, she was named the Chair Emeritus of the Diversity and Inclusion Initiative. At the local level, she is currently serving as the President of AIGA St. Louis.

In the Rye Creative

Sharply focused on crafting human-centered design systems, Parker McLean speaks, designs, loves and creates in Vancouver, BC. Motivated to push the needle on honest, bold and inclusive design, Parker is co-founder and creative director at In the Rye, a boutique digital branding agency based in Chinatown. With an educational background in structural linguistics, he could talk your whole face off about inclusive brand semantics in the digital sector - maybe, just don't get him started.

The Design Trust

Samuel Holleran is an urbanist, interdisciplinary artist, writer, and design educator. He works at the intersection of art, urban design, and civic engagement. He is interested in mobilizing popular forms of visual culture like hand lettering, vernacular printing, model-making, and animation to address real-life issues and explore under-examined histories.

Sam works as a Design Educator at the Center for Architecture Foundation and the 92nd Street Y in New York City, and previously worked at the Center for Urban Pedagogy (CUP). From 2014-2015 he is the Participatory Design Fellow with the Design Trust for Public Space, working with the Queens Museum of Art and the NYC Parks Department to engage communities surrounding the Flushing Meadows Corona Park.
