Emily Carr University of Art + Design invites applications for a full-time tenure track Assistant or Associate Professor position in Interaction Design within the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media. Situated on unceded, traditional and ancestral xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) territories in Vancouver, Canada, Emily Carr University is a world-renowned learning and research community dedicated to the education of artists and designers.
The Interaction Design major focuses on design that facilitates experiences between people and environments through emerging technologies. The program places particular emphasis on open source and shared value economies, digital citizenship, the materiality of interactions, and class, race, and gender issues in design for emerging technology. Interaction Design plays an active and strategic role in shaping a sustainable future. It is one of three design majors in the Faculty of Design and Dynamic Media (DDM). The majors in the DDM Faculty share values and goals in areas of collaboration, sustainability, interdisciplinarity, technological engagement, new research methods, new approaches to design and to imaginative and provocative work.
SUMMARY OF RESPONSIBILTIES
Candidates should possess the ability to teach students at multiple levels, from Foundation to Masters of Design programs, and will be expected to contribute to developing curriculum in an institution that is committed to the interrelation of theory and practice. The successful candidate will join a dynamic team of cross-disciplinary design faculty comprising industrial design, interaction design, and communication design. Candidates should be equally fluent in design discourse and studio practice and in balancing the conceptual, aesthetic and technical demands of the discipline. Additionally, faculty are expected to participate in portfolio reviews, upper-level design critiques, provide undergraduate and graduate student supervision, serve on administrative committees, and to be an active and engaged member of the Emily Carr community.
The ideal candidate will have:
• Master’s in Design (or terminal degree in related discipline);
• strong evidence of exceptional work within interaction design;
• a minimum of three years of professional experience alongside post-secondary teaching, design practice and research;
• intercultural competence; the ability to communicate effectively and appropriately with people of various cultures is expected.
Preference will be given to candidates with expertise in at least one of the following areas:
• Interaction design for big data and complex information architectures, including agentive technologies;
• Gameful design principles; interaction design for 2D and 3D Augmented/Mixed Reality environments;
• Service design for digital governments, healthcare and public sector service design.
• must work effectively in interdisciplinary design teams on curriculum focusing on ethical design practices addressing cultural, socio/political, and sustainability issues.
• should have documented UX design experience leading iterative human-centered and post-human centered research activities and understand the role of iterative prototyping and collaboration at different scales.
• should demonstrate fluency in hybrid prototyping methods including programming, scripting, coding, screen-based as well as 3D prototyping materials.
• a commitment toward operating system agnosticism and open source tools is required;
• basic proficiency with spatial computing and 3D modelling tools, mobile app prototyping tools, HTML, CSS, JS, Arduino, Rpi, Tableau, Processing and D3, among others preferred.
